BNSF Railway Company History
Today’s BNSF Railway is a product of 390 different merged lines. The oldest and largest predecessor was the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB&Q), founded in 1849. The first train went from Batavia to Turner Junction (now West Chicago). This line operated the first printing telegraph in 1910. It also introduced the first diesel-powered streamlined passenger train.
The Burlington Northern Railroad was created in1970, with the merger of four primary lines: CB&Q, the Northern Pacific (NP), the Great Northern (GN), and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle (SP&S). Each played an important role in developing America’s west. The NP was created by an Act of Congress, signed into law by President Lincoln in 1864. It followed much of the Lewis & Clark route, opening up the uncharted West.
In 1901 the NP and the GN purchased the CB&Q, providing access to Chicago, the Midwest and South. By 1905 the SP&S was built to serve as a GN and NP link. The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company, known as the Frisco, suffered everything from the Civil War to the Great Depression, adding to its rich history before it became part of Burlington Northern in 1980.
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (AT&SF) name stayed intact from 1863 to 1995, when it merged with Burlington Northern to create BNSF Railway. It played a key role in promoting art and culture in the southwest.
