PhotoPlus Expo 2005 Seminar - What Stock Business Model is Right for You?

Link to article as posted on MacTribe website.

Jacob Javits Center, NYC, October 22nd, 9:00 to 12:00, www.photoplusexpo.com

Moderator – Pat Hunt

As a consultant to the stock industry and its artists for many years, one of the issues I have found most troubling for artists to understand is the variety of business models available to them. It presents a challenge to negotiate the slippery landscape of changing pricing models and which system offers the best or fairest return. Please join me for a panel discussion of the top industry leaders to help guide you though the maze and help you decide what business models are right for you.

Our panel consists of eight top people from important companies, which lead the industry in Internet technology, dynamic growth and creativity. It is an ideal group to offer a broad scope of knowledge to the participating audience:

James Alexander - Director of Adobe Images
James West - CEO of Alamy
Paul Banwell - Director of Photographer and Filmmaker Relations of Getty Images
Patrick Donehue - Vice President, Photographer Relations of Corbis
Alexis Scott - CEO of Workbook Stock
Brad Kuhns - Co-founder of IPNstock.com
Christina Vaughan – CEO of Image Source
John Lund - Stock Photographer, Author and Lecturer

Moderator - Pat Hunt, V.P. of Corporate Relations at Index Stock Imagery, Author and Lecturer.
Each panel member will make a short presentation, followed by an audience Q&A. There will be handouts of industry definitions and company information.

Some issues to be discussed:

- High-resolution commercial sales
- Advertising vs editorial
- Small Office/Home Office
- Consumer
- Subscription
- Rights Managed vs Royalty Free
- Alternative pricing models - ex: bulk, flat, negotiated, contractual
- Assignment stock
- Wholly owned vs artist representation
- International and domestic affiliates
- Portals and third party revenues

Typical FAQ’s:

- How to get into your agency?
- What sells the best - subject, style, concept, etc.?
- Quality, release and trademark requirements?
- Digital submission guidelines?
- Niche collections and productions houses?
- Merges and acquisitions?
- Low prices and how to make a profit?
- How to understand artist payment statements?
- How to work with Art Directors/Editors?
- What percentage of revenue comes from each business model?
- How best to make money, and how much can I make in the industry?
